Woodlands Christian Cross Country: Off and Running
Cross Country has always been a staple sport of The Woodlands Christian Academy, and this season the team is off and running.
The 9-time state champions have already done exceptionally well in their first three meets. Competing against 24 schools in their first meet, the boys team finished 3rd place overall. Hudson Howard won a medal, finishing 8th place, beating his time at this race last year by 1:19.
The following week both the girls and boys teams competed against 30 schools resulting in the boys finishing 4th overall, and the girls finishing 5th overall.
“The initial goal is always around PRs for individuals,” head coach Tom Earle said about his team’s goals for the season. “As a team, ultimately the goal is to win the district championship. I think the girls have a good shot. The guys are probably one of the best in the district.”
The Warriors competed again this past Saturday in the Cypress Christian Relays.
Two coed teams of 12 competed for the Warriors, with one team finishing in 2nd place. The other squad took home a 3rd place finish. The rest of the athletes in the program competed with individual time trials.
Notable runners on the boys side to look for this season are Hudson Howard (sophomore), Lucas Trevethan (senior) and Zach Bagnoli (senior). Trevathan is trying to make his mark in his final year of high school cross country and to potentially take his talents to the collegiate level.
On the girls side, watch for Zoe Calimani (junior) who has medalled in both races this season, Flo Shirley (sophomore) who medalled in the first race of the season and Elaina Formica (freshman) who also medalled in their meet last week.
As historic as this program has been, the Warriors are out to continue on their legacy as one of the best cross country schools in the state. Stay on watch for their progress this weekend at the second TWCA XC Meet the Warriors have hosted and for the rest of the season.
