Warrior Athletics Weekly - Spring Sports Ramp Up as the Winter Season nears end

The Warrior Spirit is alive and well on both the soccer pitch and basketball court at TWCA.

While it hasn't been the winningest season for the boys and girls soccer teams and the girls basketball team, each squad has continued to grow and has shown incredible resolve and improvement throughout their season. On Monday, both the soccer programs lost tightly contested games by one goal against Emery/Weiner despite injuries and other obstacles placed in their way. On Wednesday, the girls basketball team took Fort Bend Christian down to the wire, before ultimately falling, 32-31, to the Eagles.

The future looks bright for all three programs!

The boys basketball team continued their great run in District 5 play with another road win against Fort Bend Christian on Wednesday night. The Warriors are now 8-0 in district play, and are great position to earn a district title with four games remaining in the regular season.

As the winter sports teams wrap up their seasons, the spring sports are poised to take over the action. The baseball and softball teams each started their practices last week, while track & field and swimming each competed over the past weekend.

At the TAPPS Regional Swim meet, the Warriors had several athletes earn medals for their respective races. Here are some of the highlights:

  • Audrey Sanchez - 1st, 50m Free; 2nd, 100m free
  • Brynnah Stowell - 2nd, 100m Fly; 1st, 500m free
  • Alexa Perez de Arenaza - 19th, 50m Free
  • Sarah Powell - 18th, 50m free
  • Michael McKenny -  10th, 50m Free; 11th, 100m Breaststroke
  • Girls 200 Free Relay, 5th; 400m Free Relay, 4th

The Track & Field team also competed over the weekend at the Texas Tech Invitational Indoor Meet. A select group of athletes flew with Coach Earle to Lubbock to compete with some of the top athletes in the state. Here is what Coach Earle said about the event:

"The Varsity Track & Field team had a special opportunity this last weekend.  This was the first athletic team to ever fly to a competition as we travelled to Texas Tech University in Lubbock.  We competed in an indoor track meet against athletes from all over the country.  As a bonus, we arrived early and got to watch the conclusion of a Big-12 college track meet and see how those athletes prepare and compete.

  • Zoe Calimani – 400m & 800m – improved her time in both races; finished 68th out of 200 in the 400m and 35th of 83 in the 800m
  • Philip Catron – competed very well in the 400m (85th of 185) and 800m (35th of 112)
  • Taylor Makiya – Shot Put – did great and finished 16th place out of 45 throwers
  • Lily Phelps – 60m & 200m – improved her time in the 60m and this was her first indoor 200m
  • Flo Shirley – competed in the mile and finished 36th out of 76 competitors
  • Kate Spitz – 60m & 200m – competed well in both (was her first time to race 200m indoors)
  • Lucas Trevathan – set a new personal best in the 800m!
  • Jane Watkins – 60m & 200m – set a new personal best in both races!

This was a great experience and a way to reward a group of athletes that have been working out hard since November.  We are set up well for the outdoor track season which begins with our home meet on Saturday, Feb 18.  We are hosting 30 private schools and a total of about 600 athletes."

The JV Boys golf team was also in action on Wednesday at the Huntsville ISD Invitational at Bearkat Course near Sam Houston State University. Led by sophomore Duke Heise, the Warriors won the team event with a collective score of 306. Heise was the low individual with an even par 71 on the day.
