Girls -

The TWCA Girls basketball team made history on Tuesday, February 22nd by becoming the first team in program history to advance to the 3rd round (Regionals) of the TAPPS playoffs, beating Corpus Christi Incarnate Word Academy, 44-27, at St. Joseph’s High School in Victoria, Texas.

The Warriors ended the regular season on a high note, earning 2nd place in 5A District 5 after beating Lutheran South in a tie-breaking match. In the first round of the playoffs, TWCA beat St. Mary’s Hall (San Antonio), 43-35, in front of a home crowd in the Daniel Gym.

Tuesday’s competition saw the Warriors jump out to an early lead against the Angels, giving TWCA a 24-8 halftime advantage. Incarnate Word battled back in the 2nd half, but seniors Kenzie Morris, Danielle Mendoza, Reagan Harris, Chesnie Russell, Madison Frey and junior Kelly Gorman kept the Warriors in front for the rest of the game.

TWCA (19-9) is riding an eight-game winning streak, and will now look to take down #1 ranked Geneva Boerne (27-1) on Saturday in the TAPPS 5A State Quarterfinals.

The game will be played on Saturday, February 26, at 2 p.m. at Flatonia High School in Flatonia, Texas. Tickets will be $6 for adults and $4 for students and can be purchased at the gate.

Boys -

Title defense, engaged.

The TWCA Boys basketball team earned their place in the TAPPS 5A quarterfinals with a rousing 84-55 victory over Ft. Bend Christian Academy on Tuesday, February 22nd in front of a raucous crowd in Daniel Gym.

For the third consecutive year, the Warriors went undefeated in district play, which earned them their fifth straight district championship. After a first round bye, TWCA drew FBCA for the third matchup of the season.

The Warriors left no doubt.

TWCA jumped to a 21-4 lead after the first quarter and never looked back. Seniors Austin Benigni and Chanse Perkins both reached historic milestones to cap off the evening as well. Benigni reached the 2,000 point mark (1,500+ with TWCA) for his high school career and Perkins joined the 1,000 point scorer’s club.

The streaking Warriors have not lost a game in 2022, with their last defeat coming in late December — a 1-point loss to UIL 6A #3-ranked Westfield. Since that game, TWCA has been on a tear led by Benigni, Perkins, fellow senior Jack Cole and juniors Wyatt Boeker and Josh Bento.

Austin St. Michael’s is up next for the Warriors in the Regional Round of the playoffs. The game will be played Saturday, February 26, at 2 p.m. at A&M Consolidated High School in College Station, Texas.

Tickets must be purchased online.
