Our students are getting STEAMed up and applying their critical thinking skills in the real world! Learning isn't just taking place in the classroom anymore. The Biotech team showcased what they've been learning at the Sci://TECH Biotechnology Competition at Lone Star College on February 12th. Students worked in pairs and used DNA fingerprinting techniques to analyze samples and solve a real-world case. Competing against teams from several local high schools, students were assessed on both technique and data analysis.

It was the first year TWCA competed and students were excited for the opportunity to test their metal against peers. Reflecting on the competition, junior, Raina Hummel said, “I was able to apply the lab skills I learned into a more professional setting. This definitely increased my passion for genetics and biology.”

Sophomore, Rachel Smith shared similar sentiments, saying, “It was so awesome to do my own higher level lab work and compete in a team on both skills and knowledge. Learning to do gel electrophoresis prior to the competition was super fun and interesting.”

TWCA was able to hold its own against schools devoted to science such as the Academy of Science and Technology and the Academy for Careers in Engineering and Science (ACES).

“I am proud of how our kids performed, especially given the fact that 80% of them haven’t even finished an AP Biology course yet,” Faculty sponsor Jessica McKenny said.

Competition was tough, but TWCA earned the highest technical score, and Raina Hummel and Ellen Watt took first place in Data Analysis. With the addition of new courses - Honors Biotechnology and Applied Principles of Bioengineering next year, the team will surely grow and develop a competitive edge!

The following teams earned A-grade technical ratings:

Davis Johnson & Katie Holloway

Dominic Spahr & David Garcia

Christiana Camarillo & Michael McKenny

Raina Hummel & Ellen Watt*

Cristian Grieco & Rachel Smith*

*Asterisk denotes a team that earned a perfect technical score from the judges.
