Golf state championship headlines Spring sports success at TWCA
Golf
After missing a chance to win TWCA’s first state championship in golf in 2020, the Warriors were determined to bring home the title this year.
The boys team won the district and regional championships by comfortable margins and continued that momentum to win the 5A TAPPS State Championship by a resounding 33 strokes.
Sophomore Jack Usner led the charge, winning the individual title with a score of 139 (-5). Fellow sophomore Aaron Pounds finished tied for 3rd and junior Ethan Bridges took home 8th place to give the Warriors three players in the Top 10. Sophomores Jake Maggert and Sam McClure also finished inside the Top 20, showing the depth the Warriors brought to the course all season.
"It took a while until it sunk in for the guys," head coach Jonathan McNeese told VYPE. "It was something we were expected to do. Now, to actually do it, it wasn't until we were on the bus and having dinner last night that it clicked. And to think these guys have a few more opportunities at it is special.”
Baseball
It’s not how you start, but how you finish.
TWCA baseball peaked heading into the TAPPS 5A Division II playoffs and rode their momentum all the way to state semifinals before falling to eventual state champions Lutheran South in a 1-0 nail-biter.
The Warriors named three players — Marshal Hale, Carson Queck and Christian Berger — to the first team all-district squad. Three more were second-teamers. Berger, Hale and Austin Boyd made the Academic All-State team as well.
Track & Field
After both the boys and girls teams took home district championships, it was onto the regional meet. The Lady Warriors finished atop the leaderboard to claim the South Region title, with the boys earning a runner up at the meet.
At the state championship meet, the Warriors earned a 3rd place finish, with the Lady Warriors taking home 4th place.
Senior Ben Shearer took home the gold in the 800m, 1600m and 3200m races, setting TAPPS state records in the mile and 3200-meter races. Evan Sanni-Thomas, Austin Benigni, Colby Gorman and Jack Cole also set school records throughout the season.
At the state meet, the Lady Warriors’ 4x400 team of Mia Torres, Lindsay Worthington, Maddie Steed and Zoe Calimani took home the gold medal setting a school record. Catherine Berger earned a silver medal in the shot put and Sarah Chappelle took bronze in the 100-meter hurdles. Senior Megan Hanigan earned a bronze medal in the pole vault.
