Visual Arts
Lower School
PK-4th grade students will have weekly Art classes. Students will be introduced to the visual arts through vocabulary, demonstration, reflection, collaboration, and exploration of a variety of art mediums and processes.
We will study the elements of art and principles of design as well as incorporate historical context and color theory while growing an appreciation for His creation as well as our own and others. Our hope is to always foster a love of learning of the visual arts through creativity and discovery for the glory of Jesus Christ.
Middle School
Digital Art Class is designed to enhance students’ digital literacy with an introduction to a broad range of creative software including the Adobe Creative Cloud Suite. Students will learn the elements and principles of art through all core digital art disciplines, Graphic Design, Animation, Photography, Digital Drawing, and Painting.
2D Art Class teaches the Elements of Art and how to use these tools to draw on a 2-dimensional surface. Students will look at the work of master artists as they study different styles and art periods. Students will learn how to break images into shapes and then draw them as forms, how to use value to shade, how to create the illusion of space in order to create foreground, middle ground, and background, color theory, and how to create implied texture. Students will explore a wide range of media and techniques such as acrylic paint, watercolor, pen and ink, chalk, and color pencil.
3D Art Class teaches the Element and Principles of Art and how to use these tools to create 3-dimensional art. They will look at the work of master sculptures as they study different sculpture techniques such as additive, subtractive, and relief. Students will explore a wide range of media such as clay, Papier Mache, printmaking, textiles, and plaster.
Students will participate in local and statewide art competitions. Student work is often placed on public display.
Photography allows students the ability to learn the fundamental skills and applications of using a digital camera. Students examine photographic styles, types, history and will explore building compositions with the elements and principles of art and design. This class provides the opportunity for students to progress their creative growth as they begin to develop a photographic portfolio.
Broadcasting students can receive production experience of video storytelling and communication, as well as special interest and documentary projects including script writing, video recording, and video editing. Broadcasting is a team building class that produces weekly video announcements and allow students to gain experience in multiple roles for success.
High School
Photography & Graphic Design courses offer students the ability to learn the fundamental of a digital camera and creative design software. Students examine photographic styles, types, history and will explore building compositions with the elements and principles of art and design.
Animation allows students to learn basic animation theory and mechanics, develop observational and drawing skills and study the fundamental principles of character design, layout, and storyboarding. Animators learn to navigate both 2D and 3D environments.
Broadcasting students can receive production experience of video storytelling and communication, as well as special interest and documentary projects including script writing, video recording, and video editing. Broadcasting is a team building, student lead class that produces weekly video announcements and allow students to gain experience in multiple roles for success.
Introduction to 2D students will get an introduction to the fundamentals of drawing and painting. Students will expand their recognition of the Elements and Principles of design and apply these tools to create a good composition. Students will learn through practice about basic drawing strokes, shading and gradation, calculating distance, tonal contrast, how to enlarge an image, color blending, color theory and harmonies, creating a transparent look with opaque paint, and different painting styles such as realism, impressionism, and abstraction. Students will work on and improve their ability to interrupt the forms and colors they see using creative imagination.
No prerequisites.
Introduction to 3D students will get an introduction to the fundamentals of 3-dimensional art. Students will explore several forms of creating 3-dimensional sculptures, including additive sculptures (modeling, fabrication), subtractive (carving), and relief (printmaking) using traditional and non-traditional materials. Students develop an understanding of form, space, volume, texture, surface plane, balance, and proportions as they explore ceramics, kinetics, outdoor and indoor installations, textiles, and working with found objects. Students will learn to develop their art through the design process of creative thinking, research, developing ideas, refining ideas and then creating.
No prerequisites.
Pre-Advance Placement is an advanced level studio art course that offers students an in-depth opportunity to develop drawing, 2-dimensional, and 3-dimensional skill while exploring personal expression and creating art around a concept. Students will work with a variety of media and techniques as they develop skills that will prepare them for Advance Placement: Art and Design and choosing a portfolio to develop. Students will focus on developing their knowledge of classical drawing the human form in motion and animating human features which will aid them in whichever portfolio they choose.
Prerequisite: Completion of Introduction to 2D Art with a grade of 90 or above.
Advanced Placement: Art and Design course framework is a college level inquiry-based approach to learning about, designing, and making art. Students are expected to conduct an in-depth, sustained investigation of a concept, employing materials, processes, and ideas that visually communicate. The course intention is to help students become inquisitive, thoughtful artists and designers who are able to visually and verbally articulate a concept through practice, experimentation, revision, and research. Students can choose one of three portfolios to submit to CollegeBoard: Drawing, 2D Art, or 3D Art.
- Drawing Portfolio focusses on drawing skill such as mark-making, line quality, surface space, light and shade, texture, proportions. Possible processes may be graphite pencil, pen and ink, painting, textiles, digital drawing.
- 2D Art Portfolio focusses on a whole composition and the application of the Principles of Design. Possible processes include graphic design, digital art, photography, collage, illustration, painting, printmaking.
- 3D Art Portfolio focusses on the Elements and Principles of Design as applied to 3-dimensional art. Possible processes include figurative and non-figurative sculpture, architecture, metal work, ceramics, glasswork, installation, assemblage, textiles, fashion design.
Prerequisite: PAP
Students will participate in local and statewide art competitions. Student work is often placed on public display.
